Malwarebytes performance abilities have risen from standard to advanced in just 6 months (April, 2021 - October, 2021).Įven though Malwarebytes offers quite a few useful features, it is not as feature-rich as, say, Avast, McAfee or any other top antivirus software. However, the testing of its performance shows a rather promising improvement. Unluckily, Malwarebytes results here are not as impressive – experts categorize its security as standard. The malware protection tests execute malicious files on the system and not on the web. Malwarebytes Premium version showed that it can successfully block from 99.4% to 99.6% threats. Real-World protection tests include using all security-related features on the web. The independent experts performed the Real-World protection, malware protection, and performance tests with it. Moreover, Malwarebytes has recently joined the AV Comparatives testing in 2021. With results like these, you can be sure that your device is protected. The antivirus program detected from 99.4% to 100% of zero-day threats and 100% of 4-weeks old malware. ![]() It’s nice to see the improvement, especially when keeping in mind that Malwarebytes has managed to beat the industry average in virus detection. The company decided to participate in AV testing in 2018 and their results have been improving ever since. The voxel graphics do a great job, even on a standard 1080p set that this reviewer was stuck with a couple of days while our usual set was packed for a move. At any rate, what a gem we missed back then. Though we recall the games release slate felt rather barren while the industry held its breath and waited for the PS5 to launch, Ray’s The Dead being our focus at the time. The pistol is out, having been replaced with an extremely accurate shotgun. The weapon set is stripped down a bit, though. There’s still some goofy humor though, like some hilarious bits of text at the end of every episode (“She is behind all the terrible plotting!”).įundamentally, the game plays much like DOOM or most of other first-person shooters of the mid-90s, entirely around key hunts. Each episode starts with a fight in a military base against these soldiers and some mean dogs, you hit the slip gate, and then it’s time to explode a bunch of eldritch creatures inside a series of vaguely abstract nightmare realms. He’s the last person alive who can stop that. Like DOOM, the story is mostly an excuse for gameplay, You play as The Ranger, who has witnessed before the game armies of thralled soldiers pouring out of slip gates to test the armed might of humanity. Quake, on the other hand, has lightmaps and 3D light sources which is evident in the glowing of your weaponry. DOOM allowed maps to have individually lit sectors, but most actual effects, like shadows, were faked and built into the level designs. Also new is more robust lighting features. There’s also water, where you can swim up and down. You can properly jump now, too, plus more realistic movement physics. id Tech 2 eliminates this limitations, and the worlds are now completely 3D, adding in a new level of vertical freedom. Being able to move the camera up and down was a game changer (though games like Heretic and Duke Nukem 3D experimented with it mildly), and every single modern FPS owes what id did here a great deal of gratitude. ![]() The Build Engine had a similar limitation but got around it with assorted trickery. Games like DOOM were referred to at the time as not being “true” 3D, because while you could create areas of various heights, you couldn’t, for example, place a room on top of another room. Like DOOM before it, Quake also changed how FPS games were designed through technological advancements. Quake even helped sell more expensive systems that could render high end graphics like this, opening the flood gates for other studios trying to challenge the kings of the FPS, including Monolith’s Blood II and Epic’s Unreal series. It was the single most efficient way of rendering polygons in the mid 90s, suddenly making extremely costly full 3D game development viable. John Carmack’s Quake Engine, commonly called id Tech 2 when that’s the sequel’s engine, completely changed what the gaming landscape was. It is also one of the single most important games ever released. The story of Quake is one of mass burn out, confusion, and boiling frustration. This starts making more sense when you realize that John Carmack, in the development of this game, literally hammered down the walls of the office so he could keep a closer eye on the team for crunch mode. He later released a project with Ion Storm closer to his vision in Daikatana, which you may remember as one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history, certainly not for a lack of trying.įunny enough, Romero is on the record saying he had more fun making his flop than the big success story of Quake. Quake was id Software’s major project after establishing the DOOM series, starting as a passion project of John Romero, first an action side-scroller, then an ambitious action RPG inspired by Virtua Fighter and the Zelda series about an awesome warrior man with a big hammer and hints of areas based on real world time periods. The rest of the team eventually got tired of trying to make the then extremely ambitious idea work, possibly not helped by Romero’s deathmatch addiction that eventually resulted in him leaving the studio shortly after Quake released. Though, at first, it was simply full 3D DOOM with a Lovecraft theme. Despite having four entries, it isn’t spoken about with the same reverence, largely due to just how scattershot the franchise focus became. ![]() And yet the same can’t be said for its follow-up, Quake. ![]() Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are heralded as some of the first great first-person shooters, still fondly remembered today. The writing of the books themselves is straightforward and solid, more conversational in tone than novelistic, with regular forays into gaming jargon. ![]() Again, it's a simple yet clever way to create a sandbox-like environment without the need for a referee. For example, an entry might note "If you have codeword X, go to entry number such-and-such now it not, keep reading." In this way, your past deeds, as represented, by the codewords, can have consequences, for good or for ill, later on. They're noted on your character sheet and then, later, as you go to other places, they may come into play. Similarly, Fabled Lands introduces the concept of "code words." Code words are acquired as your character adventures and achieves certain objectives. Though perhaps paltry compared to a "true" RPG, it still provides a remarkable scope for individual action, far more than any other gamebook I've read (and far more than even some computer RPGs). Even so, the Fabled Lands books do offer a large number of options, as there are between 600 and 700 separate entries in each book on average. Note that I said "sandbox-like." Inevitably, there are limits to how many options can be offered through the printed word. It's a very clever set-up and one that I find all the more intriguing nowadays than I probably would have in my youth. Each gamebook describes a different region of the Fable Lands setting and the books are set up in such a way as to facilitate travel from region to region and book to book. Instead, in sandbox-like fashion, you get to travel across the titular Fabled Lands, going wherever you wish and taking up whatever activities you desire from among the many, many opportunities presented to you. That is, there's no overarching, epic quest, no grand narrative to provide structure to your characters wanderings. What makes the Fabled Lands books so fascinating to me, though, is that, unlike other books of this kind, they're completely open-ended. This random element is part of what made gamebooks so much more attractive over simple choose-your-own-adventure books, at least for me, since, while randomness did introduce a greater number of ways to fail, it also held out the possibility that one might somehow beat the odds and achieve an unexpected - and possibly undeserved - victory. Unlike straight choose-your-own-adventure books, gamebooks included random elements, such as combat, that were adjudicated through the use of dice, so it was possible, for example, for a character to die from having been slain in battle or having fallen prey to a trap, in addition to other choices whose dire consequences you can read about on the page. In all of them, you created a character not unlike that used in a tabletop RPG and kept track of his statistics and possessions as you navigated a series of numbered pages/paragraphs based on the choices you, the reader, make in response to the situations you're reading about in the gamebook. In many ways, the four available Fabled Lands gamebooks are quite similar to earlier series like Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf. With a pedigree like that, I was quite intrigued when I learned about the re-release of Fabled Lands. I was, however, familiar with the name of Dave Morris from Tékumel fandom, where he was an editor and regular contributor to the excellent fanzine, The Eye of All-Seeing Wonder in addition to having designed the Tirikélurules for playing in Professor Barker's alien world. As I said, I hadn't paid any attention to the world of gamebooks since the late '80s, so I was completely unaware of Fabled Lands when it debuted. Now, Fabled Lands is again available, with the first four books already in print and with plans for the rest to follow. These six books were only the first half of the twelve gamebooks Morris and Thomson originally planned, but the series was canceled before the remaining volumes could be published. How wrong I was!Īs it turns out, between 19, Dave Morris and Jamie Thomson released six gamebooks as part of a series entitled Fabled Lands. Consequently, I had assumed that, like the larger roleplaying hobby out of which they sprang, gamebooks had mostly died out by the 1990s, never mind were alive and well today. I read a lot of them during the mid to late '80s, but I largely stopped paying attention to them after I graduated from high school in 1987. I've talked about gamebooks before and I even did a retrospective on one of the most famous of them. I don't think anyone involved in the hobby back in the 1980s is unfamiliar with "gamebooks," a hybrid between choose-your-own-adventure books and traditional tabletop roleplaying. ![]() ![]() ![]() They would say things like “he/she said you served some sort of magical grapes and now I am supposed to make them too.
